Chapter: Chapter Four
Characters: Gretchen Fiveash, Jonny Crossbones
I’ll have the colors up next week! At least this one is posted on time!
Edit 7/22/2019: I’ve uploaded the color version! I’ve put the B&W version below, just in case you want to see it.
I’m actually diggin’ the line work withOUT the color. But then I’m the guy that has the complete Lone Wolf and Cub, Cerebus, and Jacques Tardi’s WWI books…
There’s a charm to be sure! I still prefer Usagi Yojimbo in B&W. Looking at my pages more this way is making me think about considering shade more carefully with my color choices, too…
Definitely. And you’re right, Usagi Yojimbo is much better without the color work – he really knows where to put the blacks to punch things. Sometimes B&W is best. I remember reading an interview with Berni Wrightson, about a Conan story he did in the 70’s about some Evil Whatever destroying all the sound around it. Wrightson’s answer was to slowly remove the color work as the sound was leached away, until all that was left was the B&W line work. Trouble is, the editors were aghast at not printing any color, because They Were A Color Comics Company, by damn! and they killed the idea. The resulting comic was colored all the way through and the story suffered for it. Wrightson threw up his hands and gave up. Maybe someone else will carry that idea through.
