That’s not good.

I just got official word from Dark Horse that the print version of Jonny Crossbones has been cancelled.  This isn’t a huge surprise– I’m way late and they’re cutting costs due to the recession.  I figure I’m not the only one getting this news today.

This is not, however, the end of Jonny Crossbones.  I have some work to do on the business end, and then I’ll be shopping it around to other publishers.  I’ll also be reposting the entire archive.  I think I will also switch to a 5-days-a-week update schedule, since I slowed it down so the book would be out before I finished it online.

In the meantime, I find myself in a tight spot financially, so I will be doing what I always hoped not to have to do, and adding a donation button to the site.  It’ll stay here for a while and then I’ll be moving it to the sidebar.  Toss in some change if you like, but don’t feel obliged.  Thanks!

Sorry to hear about Dark Horse, the good news is there a a number of decent middle sized publishers now. Hell, go after a more book based publisher, many of them are trying to get INTO publishing comic work. Presenting a finished product of this calibre, they’d be fools to pass it up.

I can’t afford to really donate, but I did anyway. You, Ramon Perez, Danielle Corsetto and the Doctor Who 10 Doctors guy are the strips I keep up with. That’s good company IMHO.

Sorry to hear. I have so been waiting to buy the book! I’ll try to remember to chip in a donation when my cashflow gets back on track (moved a couple times recently) — but I’m sure things will turn out great in the end. This is an amazing piece of work!

That stinks about Dark Horse bailing on you! But I know you’ll find another good home for this awesome story!

Hi Les – so sorry to hear the news, but onwards and upwards! Never say die! The quality of the work will surely get interest from other publishers.
Garen Ewing self-published a limited (25 copy) edition hardback of the first part of “The Rainbow Orchid” as a money-raising scheme, and that went well for him, I believe – perhaps something like that would work for JC? He’s now being published by Egmont, so it didn’t harm their interest.
Are you also free to sell merchandise now? What about the usual suspects such as tee-shirts, etc.?

Why not a strictly web play? Probably because you look around and see only mega-successes and half-assed old school business models, like most people. And here you are with the most polarized quality vs. traffic on the web, and you read the “how-to” books and you want to be sick.

I can’t address this fully here, but if you know what you need to earn and you can update at least 3-5 times per week, drop me a line, and I’ll tell you some interesting things. My email, slightly scrambled against spam bots, is on all my sites, including LilNyet.com, or see if you have it already scratchinpost…

If you view yourself as a print warrior and have no passion for the web, then follow your instincts. We all have different needs.
